MAGANDA NAMAN YAN, PERO…

David’s intention was good. He wanted to build a temple for God.

“After David had taken up residence in his house, he said to Nathan the prophet, “See, I am living in a house of cedar, but the ark of the covenant of the LORD is under tentcloth.” - 1 Chronicles 17:1

Nothing wrong with that. David was saying, "if I have a house then God should have a mansion." Doesn’t God deserve to have the best place to stay in?
If one’s plan is good then it should be ok with God too, right? What does God say about David’s good plan?

“NO"

God says “NO” to David’s plan. God tells David that it’s his son Solomon who will build God’s temple.

"And when your time comes & you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your heir after you, sprung from your loins, and I will make his Kingdom firm. It is he who shall build a house for my name” - 2 Samuel 7:12-13

In today’s reading, God reminds David who's the boss. David was a good man. He bravely stood before the giant Goliath to fight for God’s people. He was a man after God’s own heart (Acts 13:22). He was handpicked by God to lead His people. But this time, David went ahead of God. David thought his plan was better than God’s. Maybe David forgot that God was the author of all his achievements. Without God, David was just a simple shepherd not mighty king. That applies to us too. Without God, we are nothing. John 15:5 says "I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing."

So always ask God first.
PRAY before you PLAN. DISCERN before you DECIDE.

A famous quote from Woody Allen goes “If you want to make God laugh tell Him your plans”

Are your plans based on God’s plan? Did you consult God before executing the plan? Pwedeng maganda naman yang plano mo pero yan ba ang plano ng Diyos para sa iyo?
Remember, your plans may be good BUT GOD’S PLAN IS ALWAYS THE BEST.

Be a blessing, that’s what God wants you to do today! - alvinfabella@yahoo.com

TAKOT KA BA SA DILIM?

Nyctophobia is the fear of darkness. This extreme fear results to intense symptoms of anxiety & depression. Actually, darkness is not scary by itself. It's the fear of what the darkness hides from our eyes. Darkness leaves us expose to the un-seen threats that may be in our midst. It makes us vulnerable.
But if you have this fear do not fear  Because it's more common than what we think. Also, there's another kind of darkness that should make us really fearful. It's THE DARKNESS OF SIN. Romans 6:23 says that "the wages of sin is death”.
That’s scary!
Here's another scary thought. We are all in the darkness of sin while we are in this world. The good news is that Isaiah 9:2 give us hope. "The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shined"
So what should we do? Follow the LIGHT & GET OUT OF THE DARKNESS. We need to seek the light. Psalms 27:1 states that "The LORD is my light & my salvation; whom shall I fear?"
Jesus is the light. HE declares in John 8:12 "I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." No amount of darkness can overcome HIM (John 1:5).
We need to follow Jesus. We need to FOLLOW Him IMMEDIATELY.
"And he said to them, “FOLLOW me, & I will make you fishers of men." IMMEDIATELY they left their nets & FOLLOWED Him. And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zeb'edee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. IMMEDIATELY they left the boat and their father, & FOLLOWED HIM" - Matthew 4:19-22
That’s how to get out of the darkness of sin. FOLLOW JESUS. FOLLOW GOD IMMEDIATELY.
Ano ang madilim sa buhay mo ngayon? Papasukin mo si Kristo dyan para lumiwanag ito.
But wait, it doesn’t end there. What does God want from you & me after we follow Him?
That we also become the light to others. Jesus declares that "You are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14). So, "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)
Be like Jesus to others. Starting today, be the light of Jesus to others. Have a blessed Sunday! - alvinfabella@yahoo.com

NA BASH KA NA BA?

I am not talking about social media bashing only.
  • You helped out a close relative yet his family say bad things about you.
  • You're a hardworker but office politics denies you that well deserve promotion.
  • You post something "good" but some netizens comment that what you said was "bad".
Maybe you experienced something similar. Some people hate you & you don't understand why.
King Saul did not only bash David. He wanted him dead. The bible says he took 3,000 men to hunt done David in the wilderness (1 Samuel 24:2). King Saul was not only a basher of David. He hires 3,000 trolls to do the same evil act.
I would have said to king Saul, "MAY ARAW KA DIN SA KIN!”
Well, that day came to David.
"And he came to the sheepfolds by the way, where there was a cave; and Saul went in to relieve himself. Now David and his men were sitting in the innermost parts of the cave” - 1 Samuel 24:3
This is it! It was payback time for David. Three points were in favor of David.
  1. I am sure the king was alone. You don’t ask your army of 3,000 to join you when you are about to relieve yourself. It would be the perfect surprise attack.
  2. David had 100% support of his men. They said that this was "the day of which the LORD said to you, ‘Behold, I will give your enemy into your hand, and you shall do to him as it shall seem good to you” (1 Samuel 24:4)
  3. Saul was annointed by God but David was annointed too. Saul started this conflict so doesn't that give David the right to end it?
What does David do?
  1. He could easily stab Saul to his death yet he simply cuts off a piece of his clothing only (1 Samuel 24:4)
  2.  He restrains his men from harming the king (1 Samuel 24:6)
  3. He shows his respect to Saul by bowing down before him (1 Samuel 24:8)
Years later, David succeeds Saul as the king of God’s people. This is why God chose David to be the next king. He knew his limits as a human & did not regard himself superior over anyone else. He chose to follow God over his emotions.
Jesus did not only received bashing. He experienced the worst suffering. He was betrayed, taken captive, deserted, falsely accused, spat upon, beaten up, was scourged, mocked & killed!
Yet, in the last moments of his earthly life he says, "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34).
When you encounter bashers in your your life, don’t “bash back”. Because Jesus calls us to forgive over revenge. To choose peace over hate. To be loving all the time.
Have a powerfully blessed weekend! - alvinfabella@yahoo.com

PANG-PAKALMA BA HANAP MO?

Iran attacks the US base in Iraq. Scary, right?
The company president announces that your office will shutdown soon. "Oh no!"
A close friend shares that she has an incurable disease & has only a year to live. "What?!
Your bank demands that settle your loan soon or you lose your house. "Where will my family live?"
Midway in your bus trip, you suddenly realized that you left your wallet. "Manong driver, pwede ba G-cash?"
These things makes us panic. You call on God to pray out “Lord, help me!”
But God seems silent. The storm continues. It does not show any signs of weakness. Where is God?
Today’s Gospel shares to us how we should handle the “storms” in our lives.
"And HE GOT INTO the boat with them & the wind ceased. And they were utterly astounded” - Mark 6:51
WE NEED TO LET JESUS ENTER OUR BOAT.
Yan ang pangpakalma. The storm disappeared only when Jesus got in the boat.
  • Jesus could command the wind to avoid the way of the apostles BEFORE their boat left. HE did not.
  • Jesus could command the wind to calm down DURING the storm. He saw that “they were distressed in rowing” (Mark 6:48). But HE did not.
The wind calmed down only when Jesus GOT INTO THE BOAT.
That’s the key when you're facing a storm. Go back to basics. Simply open up your “boat” & let Jesus in. Remember, during fire or emergencies you don’t take the elevator. You go back to basics. You take the stairs.
Don’t complicate your life. Surrender your life to God starting today. God bless! - alvinfabella@yahoo.com

KASOY AT SUMAN

I still remember one of our dialogues.
He approached me right after I led the worship in a Pathways-wide event.
"Alvin!!!! Ang sarap talaga mag-worship!". His words were truly encouraging. But his generosity was more incredible.
"Pero eto para iyo. Masarap din yan"
He hands over a small paper bag filled with suman & kasoy.
"Galing Antipolo yan. Sana masarapan kayo ni  Christine. Basta wag tayo titigil pag-evangelize ha"
I shook his hand & thank him.
His parting words were "We need more Pathways servants. People like Bobby, Stephen, you.....(then he gives me a very looooong list of names). "We need Pathways to share the Good News to more people!"
I smiled back at him.
"Salamat. But I think we need more people like you Kuya Danny Careon. We need people with the same zeal & enthusiasm as you. Walang kapaguran sa pag-share ng Good News"
Today, enjoy your reward as you enter the heavenly gates. Your life taught me what Matthew 28:19-20 was all about.
Saludo ako sa iyo Kapatid! I still believe in what I said to you that day - "we need more people like you Kuya Danny!"
May you rest in peace tito/kuya/bro Danny. Pls pray for us. Pls continue to pray for Pathways.

JUST JOSEPH

He was just a carpenter.
He was just from the small town called Nazareth.
He was just quiet. He never uttered a word in the bible.
But why does God annoint Joseph to be the foster father to Jesus?
Because Joseph was truly a JUST or RIGHTEOUS man.
"and her husband Joseph, being a just man & unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to send her away quietly" - Matthew 1:19
What does the Gospel today teach us?
That we should be like Joseph because he lived a righteous life. He wanted to divorce Mary quietly so that he might not cause her unnecessary pain. That's what righteousness is all about. Love over the Law.
Doesn't that remind you of Someone else?
  • That Someone forgave a paralytic’s sins even if He was accused of blasphemy (Matthew 9:2).
  • That Someone casted out a demon but was accused of being on the demons group (Matthew 9:32)
  • That Someone plucked grain on the Sabbath to feed his disciples & was accused of breaking the Sabbath law (Matthew 12:1-8).
  • That Someone healed a man with a withered hand on the Sabbath & was again accused of breaking the Sabbath law (Matthew 12:9-14).
  • That Someone preached that the greatest commandment is to love God & neighbor (Matthew 22:34-40).
  • That Someone quoted Hosea 6:6, “For I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.”
That SOMEONE is JESUS. God Himself is righteous. And God wants you to be righteous too. Is that possible?
Joseph shows us it can be done. He was righteous but HE WAS NOT SELF-RIGHTEOUS. He could have easily given up. He could have had Mary stoned to death! It was part of the law anyway. But instead, he was to divorce her quietly. It showed what an upright man he was.
Kaibigin, HUWAG MAGING "JUST-JUST" lang BECAUSE GOD MADE YOU TO BE A SAINT LIKE JOSEPH!
As we end the season of  #advent2019 may our prayer be this,
Jesus, my God & my Saviour, make me righteous & not self-righteous.
Have a blessed 4th week of ADVENT! - alvinfabella@yahoo.com

GOD DIDN'T

You may be financially broke but God didn't send a financial adviser.
You may have broken relationships or a bad marriage but God didn't send a counselor or psychologist.
You may be sick but God didn't send an expert doctor.
You may feel down or depressed but God didn't send you a motivational coach.
Why?
Because all these worries are temporary only.
What does God do?
You're a SINNER but God didn't let you die in your sinfulness. He sent you a SAVIOUR. God sent Himself to save you.
Because GOD DOESN'T STOP LOVING YOU!
That's God. God does everything for you. So prepare yourself for HIS coming. Leave your worries behind. The KING wants to enter your life. - alvinfabella@yahoo.com

BAKIT NGA BA?

God can create anything out of nothing.
"... the world was created by the word of God, so that WHAT IS SEEN was MADE out of THINGS WHICH DO NOT APPEAR" - Hebrews 11:3
God can create anything with His almighty Word.
"By the word of the Lord the heavens were made" - Psalm 33:6
God owns everything.
"The heavens ARE YOURS, the earth also IS YOURS" - Psalm 89:11
So if you had everything, you own everything & you can make anything then why pursue that ONE thing?
"If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go in search of the one that went astray?" - Matthew 18:12
What did the verse say again? He does not just leave the 99. God pursues that missing one Himself.
“For thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I, I myself will search for my sheep, and will seek them out" - Ezekiel 34:11
WHY o WHY?
I still remember the first time I accompanied my son in his school field trip. He was in pre-school then. There were only two adult men in the bus, me & the driver. The other students had their moms as their chaperons. I wanted to participate in their conversations during the breaks but I had nothing to say. They talked about cooking, shopping, "mani & pedi”, showbiz news & the best salons. I only smiled back or said “agree!” every time they asked for my opinion.
I felt awkward. I felt embarrassed. I felt lost. So why did I do it? Why did I chose to personally accompany him?
WHY o WHY? BAKIT NGA BA?
LOVE.
I love my son & I’m willing to do this for him. Don’t we do crazy & un-explainable things for love? And that’s the imperfect & sinful me.
How about God?
God is perfect. God can easily create another human if one gets lost. God can chose to attend to the 99. But what does God do?
GOD LEAVES THE 99 & PURSUES THE LOST ONE. Then rejoicing follows.
"And if he finds it, truly, I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray” - Matthew 18:13
WHY o WHY? BAKIT NGA BA? Why does God do it?
LOVE. John 3:16 says it all. GOD chose to SAVE you out of love.
"even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him” - Ephesians 1:4
This #Advent2019 prepare your heart for HIS perfect LOVE. Have a blessed 2nd week of ADVENT! - alvinfabella@yahoo.com

DISYERTO

Empty. A barren area of land. Lifeless. Dry. Very few plants grow there. Very few animals survive there. It's not a place where one wants to live. That's the desert. People avoid it.
But not John the Baptist.
Matthew 3:1 says "In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea."
John live in the desert. He ate locusts & wild honey in the desert. He started his ministry there.
What can a Christian learn from John?
FIND YOUR DESERT. Don't avoid it.
I met a lot of people who are like John. They found themselves in a "desert" but with God's grace look what they did.
  • A cancer survivor who now organizes fund raising events for kids with cancer.
  • A woman from a broken family who now counsels those with family issues.
  • Formerly financially broke due to his gambling, this man now teaches financial literacy to the poor.
  • A former orphan builts an orphanage for abandoned kids.
That's what God can do to your desert. God allows you to undergo a "desert" experience so you may find your own desert & bring life to those experiencing the same.
Instead of asking God "why am I here in this desert?", ask Jesus "how can I bless people here?".
I say again, don't abandon your desert. DON'T DESERT YOUR DESERT. Look for it.
That's your assignment this #Advent2019. Find your desert & THRIVE!
Have a blessed ADVENT Sunday! - alvinfabella@yahoo.com

KAPIT!

What are you holding on to?
Is it your health? Your wealth? Your title or power?
Maybe it's your successful career? Or your family?
Nothing wrong with having these. But remember also that none of these are BUILT TO LAST.
St. Paul says "I consider them garbage...(Philippians 3:8)
Who should one hold on to then? Saan ka dapat kumapit?
"Trust in the LORD for ever, for the LORD GOD is an everlasting rock" - Isaiah 26:4
God. Trust Him alone.
When you're in trouble, run to God. Psalms 118:8 says "It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to put confidence in man."
People say that life is short so make the most out of it. Dapat YOLO ang prinsipyo. I say otherwise. You-Only-Live-Once so don't live based on temporary things. Be founded on what's long lasting. Life is short so make sure you're built on solid foundation. Make sure you're BUILT TO LAST.
"Every one then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house upon the rock" - Matthew 7:24
KAPIT KAY KRISTO KAPATID. YAN ANG KAILANGAN MO.
Advent is a great time to check what are the things you're holding on to. It's a perfect time to realign your priorities. Have a blessed ADVENT Thursday! - alvinfabella@yahoo.com

THE BREAD OF LIFE

“They all ate and were satisfied.” – Matthew 15:37
I got dengue in October 2017. My platelet count kept going down at every test. It started at 104 x 103 per microliter (normal is 150 to 450) and by the fifth day of my confinement, my platelet reached its lowest count at 12. My doctor then advised me to get blood donors. The difficult part was my blood type was AB+ and the platelet donors need to have the same blood type, too. We contacted friends, relatives, coworkers, and community members. Only three qualified donors were available that day.

I was starting to lose hope. I found myself praying to God. “Lord, we cannot find any more blood donors. I need a miracle now. I need Your holy Blood for my recovery. Amen.”
The next day, a good friend and his wife from our community visited me. Since he was an extraordinary minister of the Eucharist in the parish and it was a Sunday, he offered to give me communion. I only asked for Jesus’ Blood last night but now I am receiving His Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity. I considered the communion as God’s answer to my prayer.
On the evening of that day, my platelet count rose to 55 and continued to do so until I recovered. God is truly the only One who satisfies all our needs
~ alvinfabella@yahoo.com, Didache, 1242019
Reflect: Do you take the Communion for granted? Or do you appreciate the grace that comes with the Holy Eucharist?
Lord, may Your Body and Blood strengthen us not only physically but, more importantly, spiritually. Amen.

KAPAYAPAAN, ito ang gusto ko!

That’s how one of Francis M song goes. Google him if you only know his son Elmo
What is peace? Is it the freedom from any disturbance? A world with no war or bashing. Pure tranquility. Is that peace?
Allow me to use this odd scene from Isaiah 11 from today's reading to describe peace.

“... the wolf shall be a guest of the lamb, & the leopard shall lie down with the kid; the calf & the young lion shall browse together, with a little child to guide them. The cow & the bear shall be neighbors, together their young shall rest; the lion shall eat hay like the ox. The baby shall play by the cobra’s den, & the child lay his hand on the adder’s lair. There shall be no harm or ruin on all my holy mountain” - Isaiah 11:6-0
Wow! That’s such an un-imaginable scene! The predators & their prey lying down together. The baby playing in the snake’s lair. The wolf is the guest of the lamb. I say again, wow!
A world of peace means no oppressors & oppressed. Because each one is concern more about others than their personal needs. That's the start of peace. When one thinks less of what one wants. When we take an effort to kill our own desires because it will harm others.
How can we achieve this? By LETTING JESUS REIGN IN OUR LIVES.
Isaiah describes Jesus as the root of Jesse & preaches that "On that day, the root of Jesse, set up as a signal for the nations, the Gentiles shall seek out, for his dwelling shall be glorious” - Isaiah 11:10
The day that Jesus reigns over all the nations is the day we achieve TRUE PEACE. That starts with you. This season of Advent, may we prepare our hearts & minds for Him.

WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO FOR YOU?

That’s the question Jesus asked the blind beggar in Luke 18:41.
Jesus is asking you the same question today. WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO FOR YOU?

Like that blind man, we quickly answer, “Lord, please let me see” (Luke 18:35).
We asked God to make us SEE because we are blinded by the things of this world. Today, we pray that God heals us from our blindness.
Dear Lord,
  • Instead of power, may we desire to serve others. “Serve one another through love” (Galatians 5:13)
  • Instead of division, may be go for unity. "How good & how pleasant it is, when brothers dwell together as one (Psalms 133:1)
  • Instead of asking for a comfortable life, may our trials make us stronger in faith. “For you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance” (James 1:3)
  • Instead of earthly pleasures, may we seek to please God. "Try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord” (Ephesians 5:10)
  • Instead of collecting wealth, may we use our wealth to bless others. "The generous will be blessed, for they share their food with the poor” Proverbs 22:9
The best way to cure our “blindness” is to re-focus our lives to Jesus. This week, may we have a reversal of roles so that it would be us asking Jesus “Lord, WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO FOR YOU?”
Start off this week extra well by starting it with Jesus! - alvinfabella@yahoo.com

TADHANA

Maniwala ka man o hindi, pang-poreber ka!!! ðŸ™‚
Yan ang tadhana mo. Ikaw ay pang walang hanggan. Magpakailanman. Ika nga, pang-matagalan.
Yan ang katotohanan. Ito ang nasusulat sa aklat ng Karunungan. Basaaa...

"Para sa nilikha ng Diyos ang tao upang maging walang kamatayan, at siya'y iginawa ng ayon sa larawan ng kaniyang wangis” (Karunungan 2:23)
(God formed man to be imperishable; the image of his own nature he made them - Wisdom 2:23)

Ayun naman pala e. Bakit tayo nagkakasakit? Bakit may namamatay? Anong nangyari? Basaaa...

WINNER!

Do you play TO-WIN or play “NOT-TO-LOSE”?
Let me explain the difference by using one of my favorite basketball stories.
The year was 1995. It was Game 1 of the NBA Eastern Conference Semifinals. The N.Y. Knicks had a comfortable 105-99 lead over the Indiana Pacers with only twenty seconds left in the game. It looked like a sure win for Knicks. But they forgot about Reggie Miller. The deadly Pacers shooter suddenly scored 8 points in 8.9 seconds. Crazy, right? Then something crazier happened. The Pacers won the game, 107-105! The home court audience was shocked. The Knicks did not know what hit them. (You can view this awesome game in Youtube. Look for "Miller time NBA 1995")
That's the difference. Miller was playing TO-WIN, the Knicks were playing not-to-lose. Maybe the Knicks just wanted to waste away the clock. They became complacent. On the other hand, Miller gave all for the win. The player wearing jersey #31 played to win.
Our approach to our faith can be like that too. You can choose to win or play not-to-lose.
We know that it’s difficult to follow God's laws. I have doubts I can follow them every time I read them.
Romans 13:9 says The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery; you shall not kill; you shall not steal; you shall not covet,”
But what happens when you become too conscious in following the law? The more you tend to break it, right? Secondly, you may also forget the law
That's like me saying to you "close your eyes. Think of anything except of a purple dancing dinosaur. The dinosaur looks friendly. It's singing too” What just happened? You just thought of Barney, a purple dinosaur who dances & sings.
Instead of focusing on the law, focus on the reason behind the law. That reason is called LOVE. Why? BECAUSE LOVE FULFILLS THE LAW.
Romans 13:8 says "Owe nothing to anyone, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.”
When you LOVE you are fulfilling the law. When you focus on LOVE then you're playing to win. When you are too focus on the law you are playing not-to-lose. You are bound to fail if you choose to play not-to-lose.

Btw, even Barney confirms this when he sings "I love you, You love me, We're a happy family..." See, told you it's all about LOVE

Choosing to LOVE means choosing to WIN. That’s the right path to holiness. Follow the true winner who is Jesus. May this post inspire you to #RiseUp & be a saint! - alvinfabella@yahoo.com
